Thank you for your response to our homework questionnaire earlier this term. We have used your views alongside research we have conducted, to create homework which will benefit your child’s learning. Our main principles are that homework focuses on the skills the children have been learning in school, allowing them to remember key concepts more easily, and that homework only takes an appropriate amount of time to complete.
Writing homework will be issued on a Wednesday (on a fortnightly basis, alternating with Maths homework), handed in on the following Monday and completed in homework books. The main task will focus upon a grammar/punctuation aspect of a skill they have been learning recently. An additional optionaltask, based on composing a section of writing, may also be completed. Answers to the main task will be present so that pupils can gain instant feedback on whether they have completed the task correctly (pupils will be expected to mark this section of their homework themselves).
Maths homework will be issued on a Wednesday (on a fortnightly basis – alternating with Writing homework), handed in on the following Monday and completed in homework books. The main task will focus on arithmetic questions in order to aid fluency in this area. An additional optionaltask, based on problem solving, may also be completed. Answers to both tasks will be present so pupils can gain instant feedback (pupils will be expected to mark these sections of their homework themselves).
Due to our investment in technology and our commitment to help the environment by reducing our paper usage, Writing and Maths homework will now be handed out in electronic form via the Showbie website (www.showbie.com) or app (available on the Apple App Store). Please select the ‘Sign in’ option rather than the ‘Sign up’ option. Each class will have their own login (SHYear1, SHYear2, SHYear3, SHYear4, SHYear5 and SHYear6) and password (Hardwick) to access their homework. The Writing or Maths homework will then be completed in their homework book. We have also created videos, that explain how to complete the arithmetic questions, which are located in the Showbie website. If you are not able to access the internet, a paper copy of the homework will be provided on request.
Reading and Spelling Homework
Reading and Spelling homework will remain unchanged:
Reading: Each child should be reading at least 4 times per week. Each child’s individual Reading Record should then be completed. Additional guidance about question types for KS2 parents is located on the back of the Reading Record.
Spelling: Each child will bring home 8 spellings on a Wednesday which are tested the following Monday.
If you have any questions about our new homework framework, please contact your child’s class teacher or Mr Taylor through the main office.
